HYPERTENSION
Low use of Anti-hypertensives
Drug Combination in Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension in the United States
(April 2020)
Almost 30 % of hypertensive adults
in the US (United States) have uncontrolled HT (hypertension)
despite the administration of antihypertensive agents. To achieve better
BP (blood
pressure) control, probably through the use of more than one anti-hypertensive agent,
can improve both HT-associated morbidity and
mortality. Nevertheless, in the “National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey”, 40 % of ptns with uncontrolled blood pressure were prescribed only one anti-HT medication.
Increasing the number of ptns properly treated with antihypertensive agents’ combination
may yield better rates of blood pressure
control with subsequent better
morbidity and mortality sequelae.
PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY:
AKI (Acute kidney injury) among children
receiving cisplatin therapy for malignancy (Aug 2020)
The agent “Cisplatin”, a chemotherapy that is widely used to manage solid tumors in
children and adults, can be associated with multiple
nephrotoxic effects that include acute
kidney injury (AKI). In a prospective, multicenter study of more
than 150 children
(age less than18 ys) who are on cisplatin therapy,
the reported incidence of AKI (defined as per Kidney
Disease Improving
Global Outcomes
[KDIGO] criteria) was 30 % among the
children receiving early (first or second
cycle) cisplatin infusions and
16 % among those
receiving late (last or second to last cycle) infusions. These findings, are
currently consistent with prior studies that suggest that AKI is a common
finding among children receiving cisplatin
and that the rate of AKI may be different at earlier versus later
infusions.
